I did my first 50% water change a couple days ago, replacing the tank with the spare water which has gone through cycle. so, i was wondering the next time i change water would the new water have to go through the cycle before i put it in? or could i use tap water? thank you. :)

cycled water does not hold any bb so there should be no problem changing directly from tap, but make sure you use conditioner to leave chlorine from tap. just make sure to keep an eye on water parameters to make sure the tank has cycled (beneficial bacteria in filter medias).

Where did the 'spare water' come from?

Are you talking about aged or treated water?

Aging water only works for chlorine.

How big of a tank are we talking here?

How long has it been cycled?

ALWAYS dechloriniate/dechlorimine the water like shoefreak03 said, if your not sure what's in your water, call your water department they are usually happy to tell you (talk to the lab if possible). Then make sure you have the right treatment for your water.

sorry for not clarifying, but the "spare water" is cycled water i guess, just with pH. it's only a 20 gal.

so... the new water i would have to put in the tank only needs water conditioner? no need for pH or such? thanks for you help.

yeah and make sure the temp is around the same in the tank since were only talking 20 gallons and could possibly stress your fish. Also wait a couple minutes before everything is pluged in so that the conditioner has an effect and dosen't wipe out any BB colonies.

As long as you don't have any weird circumstances we don't know about.

Why were you adjusting pH?
