Hello,

State where exactly you're from, and tell us your favorite LFS! And any reviews you'd like to add.

I am from Alameda.

I have two stores that I frequent.
1. Lucky Aquarium - located in Oakland, on broadway (http://www.yelp.com/biz/lucky-goldfish-inc-pet-shop-oakland)

The store has beautiful display tanks (both fresh and salt), and has a consistent variety of fish. You should be careful of certain tanks, in which traces of ich and dead fish can be seen. However, this is definitely not true for the majority of them. I have had no problem from the fish I bought from them, and actually when buying the same fish from Lucky and Albany (an over-priced "quality" store), the ones from Lucky are much better off--one from Albany died the day I got it).

Secondly, this place allows you to browse in peace. which is a great comfort, but are always willing to help. There is one woman there (always go to her, no one else. wait fifteen minutes if you have to). She is so kind! I had not the best experience with one of their employees, but was met by this woman at the register. She is very knowledgeable and friendly. She is the reason I came back.

They have limited plant stock (but they are ridiculously healthy).

I definitely recommend this place.

2. Albany Aquarium.
I only go here when Lucky aquarium doesn't have the fish I want (Smaller corys). They are purported as being the "best in the bay" or some CRAP like that. However, I think this is false. When I go there, the older caucasian employee is probably the most haughty employee you will come by. He is condescending in demeanor, tone, and all of the above. I asked him what the difference between c. hastatus and c. pygmaeus was (after doing extensive research). When I told him his c. hastatus actually looked more like a pygmaeus, he pointed his nose in the air and gave me some BS. I posted the pics of my fish online, and the consensus is this: I was right, mr. cocky was wrong. This place is over-priced. They say they quarantine their fish, but I have seen a good amount of dead fish in their tanks.

Their display tanks are becoming algae-ridden. It is humid on hot days, with nothing but a fan blowing hot wind in your face. creaky floor boards. Good variety of plants, though. The younger asian-american worker is very nice, good recommendations. However, do not trust any of their opinions, simply because it is said with confidence. They can be wrong.

The most whack thing is probably that this place closes on Wednesday and Thursday.

Phew... Now... your turn!

I am from San Ramon in east bay.

There are 2 main stores I go to.

Aquarium Concepts: Dublin

This place is great. There is a huge selection on equipment for fresh and salt water. They have a couple 300gal freshwater show tanks and a cylindrical salt water tank that i think is 1000+ gallons. There selection on freshwater fish is decent. They have mostly small community fish and a couple cichlid tanks. I dont really know about their salt water selection as i dont own a sw tank but from what ive seen it looks pretty good.

Connies Tropical Fish: Castro Valley

Whenever I am looking for something special i always come here. THey specialize in mainly cichlids. The owner is a great guy and easily approachable. They selection in equipment is nowhere near that of aquarium concepts but I like there fish selection better. I have seen everything from pimas to convicts here. So if you are looking for an oddball, this is the place to go.

I just went to Connie's this afternoon, and I must say I am quite impressed with their selection. They have a wide variety of both fresh and salt water animals. They have fish that I've never seen in person until now. Archers, eels, RTC, pbass, lots of different puffers, and lots of other things. They seem to be well stocked in equipment and an eclectic choice of foods. The staff was knowledgeable, but seemed to not bother me, until I asked them a question.

Good deal. Thanks for the person that recommended me. I have yet to go to Aquarium concepts. I'll definitely need to head over there the next time I hit up the pleasanton area. Any other places?

I'm from South San Jose, the two stores I frequent are:

Brians Fish World - In South SJ, small but healthy fish and a helpfull staff. Not much in inventory but they will order anything you want. You can ask the owner to get you anything you want in terms of fish - he can often find exactly what you are looking for.

Dolphin Pet Village - Located in nearby Campbell, is one of the larger area stores, and the sales clerks on the floor vary from OK to very experienced. Good selection of salt and fresh water creatures, soft corals, and pond equipment. Sidelines are reptiles and amphibians and a few birds. They have some rodents which are mostly snake food.

6th ave in SF on Clement and 6th

lots of cichlids, rare, and salt. Only thing is the fish are more overcrowded than most other stores so you have to buy them within a few days of their shippment to get healthy fish.
There was another thread about bay area lfs which listed many more stores with great fish. After reading that, you'l never have to order fish on line again!

im in sonoma county i go to north bay aquatics more than anywhere.fish selection is hit +miss but they can get anything ive ever wanted in a few days if they dont have it in stock the folks that work there are real fish people which is always a +

There are a few in san jose, its not the best but you can sure find something if ur looking.
