Got a one year old motoro in a 40gal tank with a canister filter on it for a 350gal. Currently cycling a 120 gal to move him to. All paremeter are normal ph 6.0 am 0 nitrites 0 nitrates 10. New tank is good but ph still not right its still 7.8 so that is why i haven't moved him yet. OK NOW THE QUESTION: Why is it that somedays he spend most of he's time under the sand and then he acts fine and out and about for months is this a normal pattern?... He eats great up to 50 shirmp a day ate great and was out and about yesterday and this AM. But was under the sand when i got home and is still so don't know how long he was like that he will move positions but still be under the sand. Just woundering if i am just buggin out. trying to still understand ther patterns. It is getting cold in NY but his temp is in the green zone. hope you guys have some answers for me!

Rays hide for several reasons... I would guess that your ray may be suffering from accute stress from his small confines. what disc size is the ray? Could also be hiding becasue rays do that... some more than others...

What do you mean by the temp is in the "green zone"? A ray will need something around 80-82....

Why are the PH's different from each tank?

What is the PH from your tap water? if the tap water is 7.8, and the smaller tank is 6, then your tank is probely having a PH crash from deteriorating water quality, or some sort of buffer is in the tank......

If the PH from the tap is 6, and the new tanks ph is 7.8, then something in that tank is raising it.... (gravel, rocks, ect...)

well the tank he is in now gradually became 6 but the tap waters ph is 7 like it should i want to move him to his new tank asap i did a fishless cycle b putting his old filters and tank water and sand in the tank...but the water par are great except the 7.8 ph cani just move him in the new tank to de stress him from being in such a small tank will that kill him? the old tank did have a buffer put in it when i first got it set up

Whatever u do dont put the ray in the new tank until the ph in both tanks are the same If I were u I would get the ph in the old tank the same as the new tank with gradual water changes if u just put him in the new tank u will just end up with a ver sick ray or a dead ray. the main thing about rays are that they dont like big ph fluctuations.

i know that i was just asking bc if he is stressing out bc the tank is to small i dunno how long i can keep him in there...his disc size is 8" and he is a foot long already...just actually feed him his 25 shrimp and he ate them n 5 min like always.... he comes out when it gets dark for some reason now which is the whole consern w/ me rather know if i am being to overlyconserned

i would do 2- 25% waterchanges per day on the 125 gal, 1 in the morn and 1 at night to get the ph stable and down to 7 same as your tap. then acclimate the ray to the 125 gal.

if he is healthy, he should be able to handle it ok. a 40 gal is way too small and crashes way too easily. JMO

Yeah, focus on getting that ray in a bigger home. You're pH is dropping off because you have too much biomass in the small tank. I see it a lot.

You're ray will live just fine in a pH of 7.8 - as long as you acclimate slowly to the new higher pH.

Keep temp in the upper 70's or low 80's and you'll see a much healthier ray in the new set up compared to the small 40 gallon. A healthy well adjust ray will spend more time out and about instead of buried in the substrate.
