It seems to be they exist throughout europe, so I assume they are in Northern spain which is where i live now.

Does anyone know for sure their European distribution?

I am determined to catch one, does anyone know the best tactics and whether they reside in fast flowing or stiller waters?

Cheers.

I just know i caught one in New York (usa new york)

It was caught in a river. I used a shiney metal jig called a Cicada. They are often caught there with shiney metal lures.
(i dont know proper fishing terms)
The water there was pretty calm. Not a fast flowing river. It can have current in the winter. But the fish was hanging out in a shallow area with a lot of seaweed.

I catch them in still lakes with a crankbait, spinnerbait, or if the water is really calm (like glass) I'll use a jitterbug.

Ok, someone that knows the names of the lures.
I'm sure the one i used is one of those he mentioned. :grinno:

Ha, thanks for the replies.

So a metal spinnerbait type thing would be better than a live worm right?

I'll try and catch one soon. The only river near here is apparently a trout river, and most of it is very fast flowing.

Here is a listing of where they are known to be found

I have caught them on large red and white crank baits and daredevil spoons but my most consistant successes were with a large chub minnow live hooked and tossed near a weed bed using around 3' of leader to the weight, by large I mean 8-10" minnow. I have also taken them with surface poppers and smallish ones with flies.

Pike prefer lakes and slower waters so look less active waters, I found mention of good pike fishing in the Tajo river and in Burgillo lake, Other places mentioned were Henares, Fresnedas, and Tajunas rivers.

guppy - thanks very much for the info :)

INteresting that pike are only an introduced species in Spain.

I looked for those rivers and lakes but could not find them on a map, do you happen to know if any of them are northern spain?

I don't know spain but I think they are near Madrid
