Hi everyone! Long time lurker, first-time poster. I figured this would be an interesting contribution to the forum. My LFS is sort of shady, but in a good way. They have been around forever, and have a huge stockpile of basically everything aquarium-related you could imagine. I've been going there for years now, and have developed a bit of a friendship with the employees and owner. Awhile back, they custom-ordered a lid for my 10 gallon metaframe that has been in the family since new that I set up again, because the original reflector left way too much space for fish to jump ship. When I went down around christmas time looking to buy a new aquarium, I was informed that they had some never-used metaframes in many sizes that I could check out if I wanted. Naturally, I crapped my pants. I snatched up the 29 gallon, and have spent the last few weeks restoring it. The original tar sealant didn't even leak, but I ran silicone just as a precaution. Turtle Wax chrome polish worked great on the stainless, and it took all the warehouse and age stains right off. The lid I ordered should be coming tomorrow, and my father is going to make a maple stand to go with it. Even completely bare, I think these metaframes are just beautiful, but this one really takes the cake. According to the product catalog inside, this tank has sat empty since 1970 (44 years!!!). Nice tank and salvage... I'm surprised it doesn't have a slate bottom as all the tanks like that I have seen had. I still have one of those too, but now it has a slate bottom and a side due to breakage.

I would be curious to know how the glass thickness compares to a new tank of same size... I bet that one is close to twice as thick.

The kids are saying to that Dad in the Pic:

Kids: Hey Dad, where is the filter?
Dad: Filter? We don't need a filter.
Kids: GeeWiz Dad, when do we change the water?
Dad: Change the water? What is this, 2014? This is 19 freakin' 70 kids! Now go bother your mother, she's under the hairdryer dome.

I was surprised at this too. Maybe the last few production runs were glass in an attempt to compete with all-glass aquariums or something? All the others I have seen and my own 10gal are slate bottom. And I'd imagine it would take quite a hit to shatter the glass, it's probably hardened with secret 1970s chemicals.

yeah, check those old instructions... nothing about cycling. water conditioner and throw them in...copywrite 1959...wow.

Wait, you mean this isn't how you set up an aquarium?? ;)

OP, do a search on google for metaframe tanks. They look incredible when restored.

I love the look.

Me too. If it were up to me, all my tanks would be metaframe. This is my 10 gallon that has been in the family since purchased new from Sears in 1967. It currently houses my Electric Catfish, Mr. Lahey, and goes back and forth to college with me. It even has the original, still-functional heater, complete with an orange christmas light as the pilot light.
