Today I woke up to my brackish tank with both filters off and the water was so sandy that I could not even see my fish.

Overnight the sand killed both of my filters (a 30 gallon filter and a 10 gallon filter). I forced the 30 gallon filter on and then it spewed even more sand into my tank.

Twenty minutes later I see my fish. My dragon gobies are struggling at the top for air, and my indian glassfish have apparent ammonia burn (After 12 hours of no filter?!).

Now I am in the market of a new filter. My next two paychecks are going to be small due to bad hours at work and me getting sick and calling in on my biggest day (I work part time because I am in highschool). I will buy the filter, but I cannot make more than one trip in order to save on gas and somehow manage to get my girlfriend's valentines day gift and gas to get to and from school/work. I was supposed to visit my grandfather this week and now I cannot because I cannot afford the trip out there. I might have to skip some meals that I have to pay for as well.

I have a brand new 50 gallon powerhead I bought for my vampire tetra and I am trying to decide if I could put it in the brackish tank for now or not. I don't want to buy the attachment then find out it will just mess up the sand even worse and have to take it out and be out another fifteen dollars.

I don't know what to do and right now I have to be around this tank as much as possible to make sure my filter turns back on right after it fails.

Lesson learned.

NEVER get a shallow tank and then use sand as a substrate.
