OK so i had heard from a lot of people and books and web sites that you could keep female Bettas together. so i got a couple and put them in the tank with a divider in the middle. then a few hours latter i took the divider out and watched them for 30 min or so, and the whole time they just ignored each other at opposite ends of the tank. i walked away for 5 freakin minutes and came back to find tattered fins and one had the other by the head and wouldn't let go.

they are separated now, but what the hell?
why were they fighting, i had read that they might pic on each other a little to establish pecking order but if i hadn't come back when i did, it could have been much worse.

Some female bettas are really belligerent,2 isnt enough for a pecking order 3-6 would work better, with floating plants.
Also I have read some fishstores have been selling male plakats as female bettas

Females and true fighters look very similar.

also some juvinilles look like females...so you may have had a male or 2...
you can always try again...
but might wanna try it with more specimans, in a larger tank with some places to run n hide

on the other end of the scale, some females are so shy that they get picked on by the others and get pushed around by them. That happened to me once in my 20g I had set up a while back. I had to seperate her into her own tank because of the bullying.

You probably just found a really agro female.

As far as plakads go. If you find one priced like a female betta... buy it! I've been thinking of importing a fighter from Thailand for $50.00. Fish that attack fingers are cool.

also make sure they arnt male, there are short finned males that look exactly like females, places that sell fish always get them mixed up

do the short fined fighters have gill flairs like long fined bettas?
the females i have could be males but neather has gill flairs, and their dorsal fins are more triangular then round like the fighter.
