I got the idea to make a closed system , using a 6 gallon jar , adding a substrate and sealing it. I placed it next to a window, and intend for algae to grow. when the aglae grows and the system matures in a few months I want to add daphnia to see if the algae will support them and their waste will support the algae. I know a system like this can't go on ever , but I expect that at least for a few years it will remaine balanced, I don't intend to do water changes and just observe this "self-sustaining" system.

my questions are : will the ph lower as the system goes with out a water change? if I add snail shells will they slowly dissolve and counter the lowering ph?
also could driftwood be added or will this also have an effect on the ph?
I'm also looking for suggestions that could make this system more stable.

thanks
