i am getting worried about my harry he is a silver approx 24" and two years old, he has always been a good eater and very friendly, last week he just stopped eating then kept trying to jump out of the tank. He has now not eaten for 9 days (normally eats 3 times a day) and whenever the lights go out he goes mad for 5 minutes trying to escape the tank hitting the top so hard that he has damaged his lip.
really do not know what to do he was fine until last week, only thing different was the day before he stopped eating i tried him with a longuistine which he tried then spat out.

few background bits to help
tank 7*3*2
2 Huge external Filters 2000 lph
UV steriliser
tank is planted
sand for substrate
bogwood (no sharp edges)
floating plants and lillies
water 40% change weekly
ph nitrate and nitrite etc never changed for the last 8 months (tested every week)
tank mates large gibiceps and a small oscar
feeds mostly on king prawn with hikari aro sticks / blood worm / mussels etc as supliments.

Nothing has changed for months it is almost as if he has said right ive had enough and i am moving out ! (really worried for him as there is no obvious reason for his behaviour), i have had to put some melafix in this week to assist his wounds healing from the jumping.

any advice would really be appreciated

chris

I had an aro that started acting like that. He quit as soon as I moved him into a 4'x7' indoor pond. I have noticed that aros tend to be way more tempermental than alot of other fish.

aros get startled and scared easily in the dark.
try leaving a night light on in the room it might help.
and maybe leave the light on for the next few days until he heals up. he's probably not eating because of the injury.

Maybe there are shadows casted upon the tank now. Do you have a light source in front of the tank? e.g. large window, or open drapes. This can cast a large shadow on the tank, thus scaring the inhabitants.

there is a small moonlight led in the top of the tank, may try leaving the light on for him overnight. thanks for the advice.
