so i setup a tank for a few shell dwelling cichlids.
20 Long. ph 8.2. crushed coral substrate. enormous half conch, and multiple small shells. AC 110 filter. Coralife 50/50 65W PC. a beautiful shell dwellers paradise. ok so i decided to add in 4 feeder guppies for a slow cycle and to my surprise they ended up being my favorite fish i think i have ever owned. when i picked them up they were all about 1 cm long and gray, bland active fish. after a month or so of feedings they have grown into 2 cm silverish fish with beautiful rainbow patterned tails, but not quite like fancy guppies. much more like swordtails tails they have grown out. i mean just excellent fish. and then to top it off, there behavior is so highly impressive that i will be designing my tank around them.

i added a pleco in. i will be posting pics cuz i have no idea what he is. but then after a few mornings of waking up early, i noticed that my guppies actually sleep in the shells of the tank. literally, they lay against the bottom of the large shell or in between larger crushed coral pieces and fall asleep. if they had eyelids, they'd be shut. i can approach the tank, no movement from them whatsoever. it's so insane! so now im looking for more fish to add around my newest babies.

just thought i'd share

Can't hurt to add a new tank.lol Mind you, I'd add some Trigonostigma hengeli or T. espei with guppies. So you're not getting the tangs now?

i dont think im gonna get the tangs. if i do i'll just set up my 29 gallon. there's no way i could get rid of those guppies. it also sucks with the tangs cuz not many of the lfs around here have a good selection of shelldwellers so i'd have to pay an arm and leg in shipping.

i tried to take some pix of them sleeping but they woke up when i turned the room light on. the pleco is just hiding under his log. too dark for pix. soon tho

Same here, I am setting up a 29 breeder for some shellies because I'm on a tang craze but no lfs around me sells any. So here comes the wallet for shipping =[.

I wouldn't give up on shelldwellers, I also can't find much of a variety locally of shelldwellers, but they are among the most interesting fish behaviorly in the fish hobby. You could also try keeping them with the guppies, especially smaller species like Lamprologus multifasciatus. I kept my L. occelatus with halfbeaks

I keep guppies and platys also and prefer guppies. Add a fancy male to the feeders and you will get great fry .
A tank full of fancy male guppies is real nice sure they fight but no damage minor stuff.
Platys fight to hurt each other.
