So just a little background. I am 20 years old and am a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician with a squad that gets about 1200 ambulance calls a year. That being said my day yesterday didn't go exactly as planned.

I went to work as a General Manager at my towns coffee shop in the morning and all went swell. I was there till about 2:30 in the afternoon. The ambulance hall is on the next street over and I just walked over so I could study for my class I am taking at Rutgers University.

Within a half hour of being there our tones dropped for a head on car accident. So I was like cool I'll get credit for a call and get some action while I am here! I drove the ambulance to the accident and another one of our three ambulance showed up to help as we had two patients. So I stabilized and put her in my rig, she wasn't too hurt mostly just shaken up. So I am in the back and we are doing 70-75 MPH in a 65 zone.

All of a sudden I hear a slew of profanities come from my driver. Not too uncommon because we get mad at stupid drivers. Well next thing I knew was I was on the floor of the ambulance and I had no idea what was going on. In my daze I herd over the radio someone screaming for help that my rig had been in a serious accident. I got up and checked my patient. She was just shaken up as she was strapped down pretty well and didn't even move much. So I was helping my patient and talking to my partner to make sure he was okay. He said yes and got out to help the other car we hit.

So other ambulances started showing up. They kept trying to help me and I was told I was pretty incoherent, but wouldn't let anyone touch me until they got my patient out of there and my partner. Paramedics showed up and helped us out as well.

Well I was rushed to a level one trauma center because I was unrestrained (anyone who has experience in this field knows you can't do your job if your seat belted in) and head a bad head injury. I didn't think it was too bad at the time, but I herd the doc in the ER call a trauma code on me. They kept me in the hospital for yesterday and most of today. I was shocked when they came in and told me I had a broken rib, broken tailbone, a small crack in my pelvis, sprained hip and ankle, a major concussion, and some minor internal bleeding. I also didn't realize how much pain I was in till I woke up this morning. But, thankfully I was the most serious injury from both accidents and I am going to be just fine. I am home now resting it up.

I can also say I have a new way to talk to people who have to be put on a longboard and collared. I was immobile for the first 6 hours after the accident going between X-Ray and CT the entire time. The worst part? I have no scars on the outside of my body to show off! Unbelievable! Also, this was my first car accident..... Lol Also, I was told the driver of the other truck told the troopers "I saw the ambulance, but thought I could beat it" as he made a U-turn in front of us. Needless to say he was given 4 tickets on scene.

Oh my goodness! I'm glad you're going to be ok! I wish people would get out of the way of ambulances! I saw a van the other day make a turn quickly to try and beat the ambulance. It was ridiculous, you can take 10 seconds out of your day to make sure someone gets to the hospital safely.

Glad your doing okay. Im a firefighter and we get near misses all the time. Some people should never drive :)

Glad to hear you're OK.

well all i have to say is reading that was like watching something out of a crazy movie or something and wow you are lucky to be alive and are def alot of peoples hero for your selflesness and courage
hope you are better sooner than later
and on a lighter note is someonefeeding the fish lol....(maybe)

I h8 those people. Iv nearly hit many many people cause of crap like this. they dont realise, im bigger than them(we have international ambos, they are freakin huge) and i will run over them(our ambos have ran over cars before, engines too). We actually had a school bus do this before. Our ambo rocked them. full of kids too if i remember correctly

Glad you are alright.

I always pull over as soon as I see an ambulance coming, even if it's two blocks away. I can't understand how getting to the grocery store is somehow anyone's priority over letting that ambulance get by. I just think, "That might as well be me in there. I know what I'd want these cars to be doing!"
