Hi all..I've been keeping some amazon swords and java fern in my 10 gal bichir grow out tank and it has been there for about 2-3 weeks and i thought that i was gonna flourish until i noticed recently that they were beginning to turn yellow and i think were dying off:( ...I really want to maintain a planted tank, the person whom i got the plants from said that they dont really need that much sunlight and that the aquarium light was ok, the plants in her tank didnt recieve sunlight either and were flourishing:confused: ..Is there something wrong or do i just not have a green thumb..tips pls. on how i can maintain plants in my tank..thanks :)

Howdy,

It is true that swords and J fern don't require too much to live. I have two guesses, and you will have to see if they apply:

Amazon sword: Does fine with standard bulbs on a 10 gal (I had that myself). Thus, I assume it is running low on iron. You may want to try a liquid fertilizer. Furthermore, the center of the plant (where the new leaves come out) should not be covered with substrate.

Jfern: Mostly rots when the rhizome is planted in the substrate. You need to tie it to a rock or driftwood with no contact to sand or gravel. Furthermore, some liquid fertilizer may help.

Good luck,

Howdy,

You need to use liquid ferts for aquariums ;) They will not harm your fish. I tend to buy Tetra, but there are many more brands out there. Ewurm had great success with Kent Freshwater (brouse this form, several weeks back). For some it's a religion, not for me. I can't really tell a difference :D
