Is there a guarantee if the fish ever fails to survive the treatment process? Is it worth the money treating the fish yourself? If I were you, I'd get from another source and avoid sickly stocks. This may appear you're patronizing what the shop is doing if their fish are doing poorly.
If they just have tattered fins then yes no problem at all. Its from stress as they are a skittish fish and stress easily. They are also a wild caught only fish and probably traveled a few thousand miles to get there. All the hydro species do very well with antibiotic treatments as well if its fin rot or something of that nature.----------------this is a pretty rare fish that does not come around real often so you have to take what you can get around here anyway. All of mine were beat to hell when i got them and were brought back with meds.
There are 3 species that are common. The biggest is a hydrolycus armatus and they need around a 300g for life and can only be kept singly. They usually cost around 3-7oo bucks for a 10'' plus fish. The other 2 more common are scomb and Tatuaia and they max out at about 12-16'' but they grow really really slow. Maybe a 1/2'' a year. And they are a shoaling fish that should be kept with at least 3 or more. A shoal of 5 5''ers could live in a 75g for probably 5-8 years before needing a bigger tank. And a 220 would do them for 15yrs or life. You could keep 3 5''ers in a 55 for a few years. They grow real slow. There diet is live feeders only. Please do not get these predators and starve them to eat shrimp or something. Evolution has gave them some of the biggest fangs in fish for a reason and that reason is not to grab pellets.
