I have never seen a thread addressing this before.....

As both a chef and wholesaler of seafood I need to point out that 95% of the supermarket shrimp out there is loaded with both sulfites and Tripolyphoshphates....these chemicals which are barely regulated cannot be good for fish. The chemicals are added to prevent black rot (sulfites) and to prevent drip loss(tripoly).....I would strongly suggest finding a source or shrimp in 2 lb retail bags with an ingredient list. look for shrimp, salt.....anything else on the label look harder. Whole Foods will always have chem free shrimp. All cooked shrimp is especially loaded. Never buy cooked shrimp for any reason!!!! I do not know the effects of accumulating chemical in tropical fish but I know everyone would prefer to have there fish eat food sources close to natural parameters.....

didn't know that tidbit. Interesting will be looking up onto this...

so when you say red tail? are you refuring to shrimp that are hole bodied including eyes and head still? are those the best ones?

they could be. if they are live then of course! The problem is that unless the shrimp are frozen as caught they are stored in chemicals on the boats. Shrimp with the heads on are far more susceptable to rot then those that are least cleaned on the boat. Most shrimpers......all domestic shrimpers for the most part.....bring in thier catches to be processed on shore. These shrimp are culinary garbage. If a people ate only shrimp the chemicals present would be much more highly scrutinized!!!! Many fish out there eat nothing but market shrimp.....be careful!!!

are you refering raw shrimp also? Is there a difference between bagged shrimp and the previously frozen shrimp you buy in the windows?

Thanks for the heads up. I will have to look at the labels on the prawns I buy. I'm wondering why you would recommend the 2lb bags over other packaged quantities? Now you have me thinking if I've been poisoning myself all these years.

The bagged shrimp should have an ingredient list.....you never know what you get from the counter. Whole Foods actually lab tests seafood. They are safe. Most are not. NEVER buy what is marketed as easy peel shrimp that is deveined and split but shell on. NEVER buy shrimp pcs!! Those two are the absolute worst along with anything cooked.
