So lets say if I walk into a LFS and spot a completely spotless clown knife (no pun intended). Would it be safe to assume that it is a Notopterus notopterus? If not, how can I tell?

Notopterus Notopterus looks like a bigger and darker Xenomystus Nigri with a dorsal fin. You might've found yourself a Chitala Lopis. Noptopterus Notopterus has a more rounded head that pretty much blends into the body. Chitala Lopis has that huge hump growth after it's head.

yes mabye chitala lopis but thay get bigger than clown knife but notopterus notopterus is often found in with brown or african knifes very easy to tell apart african xenomystus nigri thay have a dorsal fin and xenomystus does not also how big was it small ones have no spots just stripes also i have seen a clown knife with no spots and a few with only one or two also was it gold?
