I recently got a Eheim 2280 - my first ever canister filter - so I'm very unfamiliar. I filled the bottom two trays with ceramic rings and the top one, the one the water passes through last, with only filter wool. Canisters are so annoying to open up for cleaning...how often do you clean your canisters and replace your media, if at all?

Most people clean their canisters when the return flow rate drops dramatically. The ceramic rings should not be replaced. Just rinse them in water from the tank.

Ah. Apart from that don't people clean or replace the wool periodically? If not wouldn't that compromise mechanical filtration? I was wondering if I would have to replace the filter wool every few weeks or so. I have no intention of even touching the media trays containing the ceramic rings, those will remain there forever. Just the wool I'm not sure how often to wash or replace.
