Hi All,

I have a CB pair of marble motoro pups that are doing great. The male the last week or so has taken an interest to 'playing' / bobbing / splashing at the surface.

I do not think this is something to be concerned with, still eats great and everything else but something he has started doing a bunch lately that he had not done before otherwise.

Wanted to make sure it is not anything to be worried about, these are the first rays I have owned.

Thanks!

My motoro loves splashing the water from the tank onto my glass tops. As long as they are not floating at the surface like an inside out umbrella or sticking their eyes out of the water you are fine.

If they are floating at the top or keeping their eyes out of the water I would suspect ammonia or dissolved oxygen problems.

When in doubt always test your water for

PH
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
Temp

You can never over test your water. Welcome to ray keeping they are awesome pets :)

What part of MI you from?

agreed^^

also make sure hes not gulping air. make sure o2 is good

Keep a good tight cover, I've seen ray scales the wall too far and went over the rim
of the tank

I agree with the posts above, always do water tests when this happens and do not use old kits or dip strips.

O2 is often the issue so make sure that the water is heavily rippled on the surface by the filters.

If all seems perfectly clear then it should be fine. I have never seen my rays anywhere other than the bottom of my tank.

Mine climb the walls and come "out" with a littlebit of their discs, kinda sweet. Never seen eyes or mouth out of the water, so ive ruled out the O2. BUT, this thread made me think, they do this when lights are off and night sets inn,and ive read that o2 goes down at nights, but isnt that only in a planted tank? (when the plants go to sleep). I have no plants, so i gues the o2 would be the same night and day? Sorry if im busting the thread, just made me think, something i usualy dont ;)

My Leo plays in the bubbles loads, usually at top of tank. He likes to glide mid water. Sometimes too. Never sticks eyes or mouth out of water though.
Often he tries to dislodge the suction caps on the filter pipes... Lol

I say it's a good sign, active ray. and curious.

my rays are always up and down the tank they like to splash the water about then glide back down i think its just part of their playfull nature.

I've seen quite a few ray death stories, and none of them have involved the ray at the surface of the water splashing....I find my ray doing this often, and it seems very healthy.

Long periods of inactivity are what seem to be the big tell-tale sign of ray problems.
