Polypterus mokelembembe :moe-kay-la-em-bem-bay(mokèlé-mbèmbé)
I like trying to say this one, it's just fun.

As for the bichir:
I like to say Ber-chur, I know it's wrong, but I like how it sounds.

And what about polypterus? or am I getting ahead of you?

I say pol-lip-ter-us, and it's nails on a chalkboard for me to hear Poly-pa-tur-us.

But that's just me.

Thanks Blondie!

not ahead of me i just forgot to add it my bad

its one of my favs too

I usually say bic-kerr (kinda lick bicker but with more of an emphasis on the 'kerr' at the end).

Anne the "ii" at the end of Latin names isn't always pronounced as a double i, depending on how it will effect the sound of the word. For example Echinocactus grusonii (golden barrel cactus, sorry I couldn't think of a fish example!) is pronounced "groo-son-i" not "groo-son-ee-i". P. weeksii could be pronounced "weeks-i" to make it easier to say. I'm not sure there is actually a right or wrong way when dealing with Latin nomenclature (as opposed to true Latin as a spoken language), but thats how it was explained to me by my old boss who has beein in the horticulture industry for 25+ years as well as being an avid collector of land snail shells, so needless to say he's had a fair bit of practice with Latin names!

Never took latin closest i came to it is Italian and Spanish so all i can go by is the online dictionaries and what i have been told as well as.Couldn't have simple names like Polypterus fred or wilbur
no that would be to simple, lets bugger the names up and watch people try to figure it out lol

really i could have found more fun things to do like work on my how bichirs eat post
then half the night looking this latin stuff up lol

I always pronounce it wrong.. I say "bee-sher" I will have to get used to saying it the proper way.

Pronouncing it like this drives me freaking insane. There's only one R. It's spelled Bichir not Birchir. But hey, to each their own.
