Now THIS is filtration...

My son and I were out and about Sunday afternoon and we came across a tiny LFS in Chinatown near downtown L.A. Had to check it out, of course. The place was an extremley tiny, family run place that looked like it had been around forever.

The selection was ok, fish looked ok, prices were good. I was looking into the tanks so much my son had to show me this "filter".

I about freaked. Cool. It's got mechanical filtration and what looks like a ton of nitrifying bacteria. It even oxygenates by breaking the water's surface. Now that's DIY. My son said he even likes how clear the water was. Gotta love it.

Not the prettiest filter but it works. Filtering theory do not change but how manufacturer market their filters do change.

I've been there and I thought that it was a great way to save money and it looked like it worked well.

Overhead trickle filters are excellent. Hugely popular in many Asian countries for good reason.
