got my tank, sand, fliter system. got my 35gal , cleaned, put the black sand/gravel type stuff ( not quite either or ) in the bottom, filled the tank up. i will be installing the filter system on thrusday, i got called up to work for 3 days early. i got a guppie ready to be moved in there to make sure everything is good.

what type of chemicals should i use to make sure everything is in check and order.

and what band heater should i get.

the guppie is the geana pig before the exodons go in

mike1987:

Before you go and start putting fish into your new tank set up, I'd read the "Sticky" writen by Dr. Joe on "Cycling and you". I believe it talks about fishless cycling, to ensure your water parameters are where they should be, before stocking your tank. You can do this by using a good water test kit, which tests, the ph, nitrites, nitrates (Amonia Levels) and water hardness. Usually, it will take a couple of weeks to fully cycle your tank to ensure these water parameters are met.

So, before you start stocking your tank, I advise you to read the sticky on fishless tank cycling. It's will help you in the long run, and hopefully will keep you from making costly mistakes with your fish and your pocketbook.

As far as heaters are concerned, I can only advise for you to purchase what you can afford. Do your research on this, as there are many brands out on the market. The internet has many retail sites where this information can be found. Once you find them and look through what is available, read the customer reviews. If you have friends who share the same type of aquarium hobby interests as you, ask them as to what they think or feel.

A word of caution here for you, is do not ask the advise of a LFS owner which would be the best to by, as he is there to make money off of you, the customer, and may mislead you into buying something you don't want or need in a heater. You choice is also dependant on wheather you want a fully submersable heater or one that hangs on the back of your tank. Do your research and then visit your LFS and have a specific heater in mind before you purchase.

I hope this helps in your endeavor. Good luck.

yep, you have helped me alot, i didn't even see that sticky sorry about that

i bought the aquaclear 70 but it hangs on the tank, i was told by my lfs it was a good one, but i also heard it on here over and over so i pulled the trigger, cool , i will look for a heater and do the cycles thanks
