I got my first two dats over a month ago. Both are still hiding for the most part and their black bars fade to gray or almost completely disappear every time I come near the tank. Is this normal with the length of time I have had them in the tank? And how long should I expect this to go on for?

3.5-4 inches

They're still very young. I have a 17" 4 bar Indo which is stable (bright gold and dark bars) 98% of the time. Then I have a 12" 3 bar indo which goes in and out all the time, but never hides. I think they just gotta get bigger and adjust, dats are know for stability changes and hiding. Are they eating properly?

My Dats are eating very well. They love their bloodworms. It sounds like the stability/fading isn't an issue as it is their shy characteristic since your 12" Dat still does it at time. Today, I noticed my Dats are swimming more in the open, instead of just coming out for food. Hopefully, with time, I can see more of their nice golden bodies and black bars. Thank you for your advice.

Have you considered putting in any tankmates for him or perhaps some large dithers to make him feel comfortable?

Mine showed stable colours overnight once the dithers were in.
