I got a NTT Dat a few days ago. It is in a 75 gallon tank that I cycled for 4 weeks. I decided to vaccuum the gravel and clean the tank. I refilled the water back up. Added dechlorinator before I put the water in the tank, after about 2 hours, I noticed the NTT breathing heavily and twitching a lot. I checked the water parameters and they are good. PH is at 7.5. I lowered the water to allow for the filter to give more surface agitation and he is doing better. Each time I raise the water, it happens all over again. Has this happened to anyone before?

Also, i noticed he scratches himself against things, but rarely, is this normal?

LFS told me he was wild caught so I was wondering if maybe I should deworm him as they are notorious for having gill flukes, any ideas?

All help and comments are appreciated. This is my first Dat and I want to do it right

NTT dats are notorious for dying out of the blue. Its called sudden death syndrome. (SDS) A lot of people say its because they are caught will gill flukes so yes they are extremely susceptible to it. Even if hes all better and you see no signs of issues, you're better off treating him

Doesn't sound good......(BTW, all datnoids are wild caught). Keep aeration high , add aquarium salt, dim lights to reduce stress and hope for the best. To be honest with you this is very common among young NTTs and survival chances are pretty low. I hope you'll be the exception. Do a search on this forum for "datnoid disease" and you'll find out more . GL

Really new to this forum and had no idea what to do. I raised the salinity to 1.005, aeration is good. I'll monitor him the next few days

shua71 : what is the best and safest way to treat for gill flukes?

Thank you in advance

I would first try to be 100 % sure that it has gill flukes before treating with meds. Google and learn the symptoms , observe your fish and then draw the conclusion. Unnecessary meds will only add extra stress. Most important, make sure your water parameters are excellent.

Thanks for all the help.

I have been watching the fish very closely. I'm only considering gill flukes because of the common symptoms. I know that dat's sometimes scratch themselves. This doesn't happen all the time, rarely if any at all. The only thing that concerns me is that the heavy breathing and twitching happens everytime I clean the tank and do a 25% water change. the water I add is always treated. I let the water sit for 1hr before adding is and do pour it very slowly. After 2 days, everything is back to normal as if nothing happened.

How often do you guys clean your tank and how often do you do a water change?

Should I stock the water for a few days before adding it?

BTW, all the parameters are good, I check them twice a day.

Since all dats are wild caugfht as per nomad, would it be a good idea to treat him for flukes?, I don't want to do anything uneccessary to stress the fish.

Thanks Again!

Based on your last post I'm incline to think that the fish is not sick ( datnoid disease leave sores on the body and gill flukes make the fish breath heavily all the time) and something that you do during WC stresses it out . Does he eat normally ?

Yes he eats normnally but when food passes his line of sight, he ignores it. I feed him frozen bloodworms at the moment. Never fed him those "feeder fish". I don't want to sound like one of those people who panic when their fish does something out of the ordinary. I just want to do the best I can for this fish as I've always dreamed of owning one.

Is there a better way to treat the water that I'm going to use for a WC?

How often should I clean the tank?
