I was a proper stresshead last night - almost lost my 5" NTT :(

Spotted my synodontis dead amongst my floating plants at about 11pm and my Dat was breathing really heavily (not fast, but really BIG breaths: his gills bellowing in and out LOADS). Dat hasn't been well for the past fortnight - some cysts on his lateral line, couple near the eyes and 1 big one on his upper lip. Been treating with Melafix (which didn't work) then Protozin, which has worked great so far. But last night he was off his food BIG TIME and looked like he was on his last legs, half lying on the gravel with no energy to chase my severum out of his favourite spot at all.

Did a 60% water change at about midnight and he's picked up a bit this morning:nilly: . Other fish seem fine. Did all the tests and yip Nitrate was high, reading at 10ppm. Cleaned my external filter and noticed I'd not recharged the Nitrate removing media for about 3 months DOH, so I'm thinking it must've released all the toxins or summat (all other readings were 0, and ph was normal for that tank at 7.4).

Absolutely GUTTED I didn't keep on top of my filter maintenence. I should know better :irked:

Thank god you fixed the prob before it got worst. The dead fish and uneaten food must have added a good increase to the nitrate levels. How long did you have the dat with cysts? Any new dats added to the tank recently? Sounds like datnoid disease.

Dont do massive water change and clean the filters at the same time. Might start to cycle again nwithout the good bacteria present

I've only got the one dat, which my bro-in-law gave me back then. 'Fraid I know very little about dats yet - what is 'datnoid disease'? Any help much appreciated thanks.

Dat has had cysts for about 2 weeks - started on the corner of it's upper lip, which just looked a bit swollen at first but then got quite red and sore. That's when I started a melafix/pimafix treatment but the cysts started appearing on the body after a few days - one on the lateral line and a couple of smaller ones on the head near the eyes (not cauliflower shaped tho thank god). Since I started treating with Protozin at the weekend the one on the lateral line has gone and the ones on the head are going. The lip is still swollen but not as angry looking, although I've noticed a lot of red veins when my dat does his 'yawnystretch' thing.

(Any uneaten food is either snaffled by my two bichirs or syphoned away. The syno had only been dead a couple of hours and was only small - about 2")

@fishroomplus: no fret - I also have an internal filter on that tank as well with ceramic media and sponges, which I didn't touch. I cleaned my external only lightly - quick squeeze of one sponge in bucket of syphoned water, and simply removed the nitrate media which was totally spent...

I know you've been treating with meds but I'd a sheet of Polfilter in there and also add some tonic salt (if you don't do this already).
There really is no room for error with Tigers and water quality-I do find Thinbars quite sensitive compared to other Tigers.
Hope it picks up mate

fraid I can't post pics - I go on holiday today for 2 weeks. Thankfully my best friend used to run a lfs so he'll be keeping his eye on my dat whilst I'm away but my dat HAS picked up LOADS - chasing my severum out from his fave hideyspot now and eating again and swimming out in the open a bit too. The upper lip is still a bit swollen and sore and there's a couple of tiny cyst remnants near the eyes but everything else has cleared up and he's breathing normal again :)

I DO have tonic salt but I don't add it to my tank (just use it for recharging the ammonia removing crystals/media that I keep in my filter).
