Does anyone have experience with these and could you please share?

I currently run an FX5 and like it, but have seen these vaguely mentioned in a couple threads and would like some more detailed information/reviews.

I will be able to tell you more once they are up and running for a while, but I just set up a pair of these.

First of all, these are very heavy-duty units. I recently read about someone breaking off the outflow on their FX5 - that wouldn't happen very easily with these, as they are cast out of very thick PVC.

The stainless ring that seals the top is also a very strong design, overall they are very well built. This seems to be the only real difference between the Nu-Clear and Ocean Clear filters, otherwise they look to be an almost identical design. I've read that the Nu-Clear is easier to open/close, but I have never owned an Ocean Clear.

What really sold me on the Nu-Clear canisters is the 522's cartridge. It is an 18 square foot 100 micron mesh filter. Since particles don't get trapped in the fibers (so they say) you can just hose it out to clean, no soaking in bleach. By following this with a 30 square foot 25 micron unit I am hoping to optimize my filtration versus service time. That's my theory, anyhow.

I forgot to mention that I am using mine for mechanical filtration only. There is an area in each filter that could be filled with biological or chemical media, but I'm not using any.

As I said, I'll update in a few days once I have a chance to hook up my plumbing.

Attached is a photo of my Nu-Clear canisters as I have set them up. Iwaki MD40RLT - Nu-Clear 522 - Nu-Clear 533

hay Dan is that a gen x pump?

that is the same set up I am running, so far so good- what are you using for bio?

Another Oregonian :headbang2 So far this is an all-Oregon thread. Chime in, JK!

The pump is an Iwaki MD40RLT. Gen X pumps are a Chinese clone of the Iwaki (Japanese) pumps. I have never used one, but I've heard they are an excellent value. I love my Iwaki pumps, 13+ years of continual use/abuse and still running strong!

All my biological media is in the sump - about 14 gallons of Bio-Balls and six Bio-Wheels. I am using the Nu-Clears strictly for mechanical filtration.

Sorry to ruin the Oregon party :)

I'm running them and have posted already my setup a couple of times recently (see the link in my sig for detailed pics of how I have them plumbed). They are heavy duty and extremely well built. They're definitely a little more annoying to get plumbed than a regular plug and play canister like an FX5, but ultimately I think they provide much better filtration. I'm powering mine with a Blueline Velocity T3 (awesome, extremely quiet pump) and that seems to be working fine.

If you have specific questions post them up and I'll try my best to answer.

I have both types for a total of 7. I love them. Nu-Clear is better but if your buying used don't be picky get the cheapest version. Get an extra filter cartridge for a quick swap out. Mark the starting pressure right on the gauge with a sharpie type pen, when the pressure goes up 5 PSI or so change out the filter. Simple.
