Would nylon netting (the kind they make minnow nets out of) make a good filter in a large sump filter? Isn't that what pot scrubbies are made out of? I would try and get small mesh netting. I want to try and cut costs and I have found large quantities for cheap. I am just looking for ideas for filtration for my 300g and I have decided on doing a stock tank sump filter. Let me hear your opinions please. (I have looked at scrubbies from the xtreme scrubbie guy but I want a LARGE amount of them and 1200 scrubbies comes out to 280 bucks so... hehe)

Straws dont have a lot of surface area.
No... I can get a TON of netting for $15-$20.

It's just from what I've heard, plus they don't have a bunch of small spaces and IDK if bacteria grows AS well on smoothe surfaces than rough surfaces. I know it will grow on all surfaces but idk about how well it grows on certain types of surfaces.

I'm assuming you are meaning for the biological filter, not the mechanical part of it. I think the netting would work, but you can't just cut up pieces of it and expect it to work well. You would need to bunch it up. Flower like, or think of the shower scrubbies your gf/wife probably uses. I think a nylon thread would work to keep it in the shape you need.

Yeah, it's going to be bundled up of course (large sump around 100 gallons give or take.)

Get a spool of cheap fishing line.

Again, much lower surface area than I would like. Also more expensive than my idea.
