Has anyone ever tried using a nylon stocking as a filter sock?

I've heard quite a bit of talk about filter socks, but I've never seen one at any of the LFS in my area. I figured I can get two of 'em for less than a dollar at Walgreens, so if when they get all gunked up I can just toss 'em.

I figure I can make a reusable ring with a rubber band and a PVC pipe piece.

Would they clog up too fast? I couldn't find any info on the actual mesh size anywhere.

i used them in my ponds to hold straw to combat greenwater and i never had a problem.boil them first and give it a try.

They don't clog fast enough , mesh size changes with water pressure
(stretch). If you place one on the outlet of a powerhead you may never see any detritus in it. (tho it does look kinda cool).

I use them as pre-filters on some projects, usually full length is better (less stretch). Silk ones are more consistent in mesh size.
