I found a nice oak stump on the beach in martha vineyard. It had floated around for a while. Realizing the tannin (sp?) will leak out and stain the water will it eventually be ok to put in a south american tank?

The first round of soaking took place and it was knarly red. But it is getting lighter after water changes.

Any thoughts?

Oh yeah it sunk immediately.

How big is your tank? I've thought about using a tree stump when I build my monster dream tank. Ive boiled smaller pieces of wood but obviously this cant be done with a tree stump. Ive heard that letting it dry out completely or near completely and then soaking it again helps. I think the theory is that the cell damage that occurs from the process helps release the tanins and such.

It is soaking in a 125 wide that I wasnt using. but would be going in a 600 gal. Plenty of space.

Thx for the input. I will try drying it out. I am interested in having an " under the stump" look in the tank, like your looking under a mud bank or mangroves. I think it would look cool/more natural. Which would mean suspending it from the top of the tank.

Nice! Be sure to post photos.

imo, soak it again, see what the ph is...aslong as the ph isn't off by more then .5 you should be fine. IMO, its your fish tho the less risk your willing to take the less change you should make to there environment.

Execellent advice. I will soak it again, dry it, soak it again then test for PH changes. And no I will take no risk with the big boys. If the ph is ok I will test with a cheaper fishy.
