So i am getting really tired of one of my oscars, i am about to drop it off at the lfs because everytime i feed it jumps half way out of the water then goes splashing in, soaking me, my wood canopy, stand and the floor:irked:. Just yesterday he jumped completely out and landed on my lid and cut himself up and soaked everything. the other two oscars are fine, they don't do it. they wait for him to get done doing this before completely coming over to me. i have also gotten bitten by him, he jumped a good 6" out of the water and grabbed my finger:eek:. made me jump because i didn't expect that. Is there a way to stop this? Its not caused by aggression because there really isn't any caused between them. the only aggression in the tank is my male convict, every one else is fine.

Personally that is the one I would want to keep. Sounds like he has a pretty cool personality. :D

only thing i could think to do is when you go to feed as soon as he starts to jump close back the lid and walk away, repeating this until you can drop in a few pellets without him totally jumping out the water even if you have to quickly open drop in pellets and close, hopefully he gets idea that he doesnt get food by jumping but by staying in water (this is how i would train a dog or a bird so i have no idea if it would work on a fish) GOOD LUCK

Thats what you would think but he doesn't. He makes feeding a pain and my glass always has run marks. he's a fricken whale. he is probably the most timid out of them all until feeding time, then he turns in to shamu. the oscars aren't really timid but you know what i mean.

right now i have just some regular glass cut by lowes on the tank. which he broke one side before. the last time he jumped out he got hurt because he landed on the light. i am getting a new full lid for christmas. but he does it as soon as i open the canopy lid. i feed him twice a day, homeade food and omega one pellets.

As above, don't reward his splashing and jumping by feeding. Wait at the lid until he calms down, then feed him. He'll eventually stop associating the behavior with the reward and it will go extinct.

My oscar does this too. She jumps about her body length out of the water, but doesn't splash me or get injured. However, she has grabbed fingers before when I have nothing in them. I find it endearing.

ok, can try that, but i will have to wait for the full lid. I never trained him to do this or nothing. he out of no where started doing it. He really doesn't eat much when he does do it.
