I've used an Ocean Clear bead filter on my 125 for the past 2-3 years and, despite being pretty happy with it, am switching back to a wet/dry. Since I switched to a bare bottom and have low pH, the bead filter alone doesn't have enough biological filtration.
Pond bead filters are a possibility if the tank is plumbed so it can fit the large diameter tubing they require (2" or so). If the tank is plumbed appropriately then using pond filters and pond-sized pumps is a definite possibility.
Bead filters can be backflushed so they're much quicker to service than cannister filters. You don't have to open them up. Wet/drys are even easier to service and you don't have to turn off the pump or flip any valves first. Unlike backflushing, no tank water is used.
I would look around at what's available for ponds and aquaculture. There are a lot of innovative low maintenance filtration systems that are too big to work with normal aquarium sizes.
