I picked up a huge ocean clear canister for $20 yesterday at the LFS. I've been researching theses but there isn't a lot of info about setup and I know nothing about which pump to get.

For plumbing I would like to have on/off valves for ease of cleaning so if anyone has any suggestions or pictures I would like to hear or see them.

From what I just read on marineandreef.com I believe all the models are rated for 1200gph here is their write up

Canister Filters: Ocean Clear Canister Filters

The Ocean Clear canister filters provide chemical, mechanical or biological filtration, and are suitable for all freshwater and saltwater fish only tanks up to 90 gallons and ponds up to 600 gallons. Because Ocean Clear filter units are modular, they are easy to link together for any application. Ocean Clear filters are reliable, built to last and are the ultimate in flexibility.

The Ocean Clear filters work well used in series with a mechanical filter (Model 317, 319, 325, 340) placed before the biological filter (Model 318). If using two mechanical filters in series, always place the filter with the higher micron size first so that you trap the larger particles before the water travels to the second filter.

The Ocean Clear filters can also be used in parallel for additional filtration for tanks over 90 gallons and ponds over 600 gallons.

They are a thing of the past. Just a step newer than UG filters

I'm really limited on what I can fit under my 125 due to the cabinet openings. I'm hoping it will help with finer particles that are in the water column. I'd like to add another fx5, but the only way to get it in is through the back which isn't an option.

I've used them in the past, maintenance sucks on them because you have to beat them open and closed with a mallet to clean. Nu clear canisters which are similar but open and close a little better are easier to open and close.

Put a ball valve after the pump and before the canister, and one after your last canister and before your return fitting and you'll be fine.

Maintainence can't be much worst than cleaning an fx5 with it still under the cabinet. I've also read about using a mallet on the top. Would flexible hose or PVC work better?

Idk honestly I'd probably be about the same. Seeing that you have to beat the lid on and off I would go with flexible hose or flexible pvc.

The only ocean clear filter that I liked was the 354 polybead filter, and that was because you didn't have to open it, you could backflush it. But if you have a heavy amount of waste it will cake up the beads and backflushing it won't break it up.
