Hey everyone! I am going to get an octopus, but i am unsure about what type to get. There is a fish store near me called beitals aquariums and they have a couple octopus vulgaris (atlantic octopus or common octopus) for sale. Should i get one? The guy there says that he has had them for at least a month and that they are doing well. If i shouldn't get those ones, what species should i get? Thanks for your help!

Well, the one thing I know from reading about octopuses during my octopus-wanting-phase is that pretty much all octopuses have a maximum life span of about 2 years. So that octopus you might buy could die on you in about 6-10 months of natural causes. Is it worth paying so much money for something that doesn't even have a year of life left in it?

If you decide that it is worth it,the ones that you mention can grow a head size of about a golf ball so how big are these and how much are they btw.I have footage on vhs from when I had mine,it would hide in its skull and then would come out and capture crabs I drop in the tank and drag them back into its skull cave.

if it inks, you need to change like 70% of the water
Octopus can move a few times their own body weight so you need about 20lbs+ on the lid to keep him in

Octos are a good animal for experienced keepers to try out.
But you need to have a VERY specific tank set up to keep them. They are escape artists, and can get out of anything the size of their beak of bigger.

Also, as posted, they are very short lived. There is no promise the one you are looking at isn't on it's last leg (no pun intended).

speaking of octopuses? can you keep squid. I've never really read about keeping squid before.

they need a crapload of room. 500g at least. but there is something called a Roscea (spp?) Squid that burrows in the sand so it would need like 55g
they are extremely sensitive, though

I wanted an octopus for so long, did all my research and then realized it wasn't for me. Make sure you do all your research before going out and buying one of these.
