My lfs owner wants to put an octopus in his 180G display. I understand them to be a smart fish and can escape easily, and depending on the species, u could loose a preety big chunk of change if it croaks. Could I get a list of species suitable for a 180, then your top choices? could he keep more than one, if they are a dwarf species? I have no idea of how to care for SW fish, just don't want dan to work this hard to get an octo, just to have it die. can all of them change color?

Octupus are difficult to deal with sometimes. If the tank is sealed completely then it should not be able to escape. Watch out though because some kinds of octupus can squirt out ink. Which will pretty much kill all other tank occupants. Making it another big chunk of change lost. So avoid those ones that squirt ink.

you cannot have an octopus with any other tanks mates because they will kill them plus each other there are very few octopus that could live a full life in a 180 you would have to get a smaller variety like the blue ring which could kill you if it ever bit ya and most octos dont change coloration alot in captivity... i could go on and on but i know that there are a couple of smaller octos that might be able to live for life in a 180 you could try and get one of those mimic octos they are suppose to stay around the 2' mark

dont get a mimic octopus bad surival rate in aquaria.. also there is alot of species that can live in a 180g. actually i think thats a little much b.c. most all octopus are nocturnal and wont be seen much.. plus there will be no coral (cause the octopus will be re-aranging the rockwork) and no fish or invert tank mates (they will become dinner)..
try a Bimac. or a Vulgaris...

survival rates in most occys are poor to begin with. =) My grandfather had a few in various tanks, every night he would find them on the floor or in other tanks. they are hard to keep in tanks dont scare them. it's not worth it. =)

sounds tricky. i doubt my first steps into sw would include octopus stocking, theres already enough to worry about. good luck though if you guys push ahead, keeping an octopus would be sweet.

yeah, I was reading, and found 2 dwarfs that only live a couple monthes, one that lives 5-7 years but grows to like 7 feet, and the blue ring octo, wich has the same toxin as puffers do, and a poison simalar to that of lionfish, but much more powerfull mixed together, and like said eralyer, could easily kill somebody

Most Octopi live for only 2 years, some live up to 5 even seven. Definately a species tank, but could put alot of things in there to keep it occupied, like jars with lids filled with food. A friend had one until he passed away ( my friend, not the octopus) in a 37 galln aquarium. He spent a large chunk of change on that Octo too.

most only live a year... so in aquaria.. they only last a few months.. depending on how old they are when collected (unless they are Captive Bred)
