One of my Bluegills has been doing something rather sttrange lately. After lights out when the room is completely dark, it sits at the surface and bites/sucks at nothing. It gets pretty loud. At first I almost had a heart attack because it sounded like wood cracking and I thought the stand was giving and my whole tank was going to be on my floor.
After a while I found out it is just one of the two gills doing this and it only does after lights out. Is it biting at bubbles on the surface trying to figure out what they are in the dark?
I'm stumped and its incredibly unnerving to almost be asleep and hear this loud crack/pop/splash out of nowhere.

yep thats what its doing. trying to eat stuff it sees on the surface. is there any leftover food in there it may be sucking up? or is it just sucking at bubbles? if its sucking up leftover food you could try and stop this by removing the food, but if its just sucking at bubbles i don't think there is really anything you can do about it. either way there is really not much you can do....

maybe try feeding it more so its not hungry after lights out?

There shouldnt be any leftover food. They suck it all down as soon as it hits the water. I'll try upping the amount and see if that helps. Hopefully its not doing it out of boredom.

Maybe try to turn off or lower your airstone at night when light's out? O_o

yea i have a blue gill that goes crazy whenever it sees a fly or anything small enough to eat is on top of the glass lid's. at times it will bump the lid up enough to make a loud noises too. not sure on how to change this behavior, maybe its just natural for the blue gill to go looking for food at night.

My pumpinseed does that wenever he's bored or hungry. But not my bluegills. They just chase each other around.

Very commom. Crappie will do it to but with a more sharp "spluk" sound.

i had blue gills they did the same thing i had a bub stone i got rid of them too much bio load but i can always get more for free.
