Before everybody freaks out, read it first, if you chose to loose your cool, so be it, but read first.

I have two bettas, i got both from a petco (or smart) a while ago, they were two fish that werent doing so well and were probably going to die, and were on the bottom of the isle where nobody could see them. (i have an underdog buying habbit) I got both the male and the female, Not having too much room and or money to spend on fish that may not make it, i got the football shaped betta split bowl. (which is not NEARLY enough room) similar to this

Luckily (and happily) i was able to get both bettas back to good health. They have now spent a fair amount of time in the splitter (few months) and both are doing well and stable. Here is where i get a tad confused. From what i read on here, fish have to be VERY comfortable and happy in their environment to reproduce. (right....) These two bettas, are the hornyest fish i have ever seen/owned. It seems like about once a month, they are attempting to mate. So my question here, is, why are they so happy and content in their environment? i assumed they would want at least a 1 gallon bowl to swim in, they just swim around happily and look at each-other through the little holes in the plastic. While i hate to admit it (mostly in disbelief) i want to say they are extremely happy in their little splitter. Am i totally out to lunch on this 1? Why are they so happy? Would their behavior go out the door if i was to put them into an actual tank?

Not every species requires the same environmental conditions to breed. Just because two fish mate (or attempt to), doesn't necessarily mean they are in an ideal environment or that they are content with their environment.

Well , it's probably because your doing a great job. I mean, you don't think that their sittin around thinking about how little of a space their in, right? Be happy!! That they are happy and horny! Moving them might change behavier.. but that's expected...

sarcasm? I hope they are happy, but im really at a loss on this 1, textbook wise, they shouldnt be very happy, but it seems they are :screwy:

Regardless, it's good that you helped them to regain their health and hopefully at some point you can give em an upgrade :P

Not personal, just my nature sometimes.... Idk, I think their happy if their acting that way...

They probley arn't happy. Betta's will breed in less they ideal condtion's, So just because there trying to breed ddoe's not mean there happy. If you can upgrade them to a 2.5g min

Truth is that they pretty much live like this in the wild. In small shallow rice paddies.
So I'm pretty sure that they are probably happy.

As long as the water is clean it's ok I think. I used to have a Betta in a 55g and a 10g. Both times it just stayed in a small corner and kept to itself.

If you have the space for fry or have an LFS to give them too, you should try removing the divider sometime. Would be a great experience. Just do some research first, or post another thread.

Merry Christmas! :)

I do want to try some time, maybe on 1 of the next batches, i have tried bettas in my fish tanks, and i never really liked the outcome, they always just seemed to get blown around, i have a betta in a 5.5 with no filter used as a big "bowl" but he seems to be an entirely different fish all together, he acts like a danio.
