So I have a 55 gallon setup basically just for Convict Breeding (even though I'm sure a bucket would have worked just as fine for them). It has an AC 110 as well as a Sponge Filter rated for 70g aqariums for filtration. But none of that should concern my question.
Right now, my setup has 4 Cons in the tank, 3 female, 1 male, with 6 Pristellas for Dithers. I noticed the Male and one Female swam around together, dug pits, and the female often chased off other females. Fearing for the non-paired females, I removed them, and placed them into a 20g long aquarium. As soon as I did this, the two paired cons seemed to stop being paired. I'm positive I took out the correct two females that were not paired. The two that were paired just went about things as if they were not paired. The swimming stopped, as did the cleaning of potential spawn sites. I placed the two non-paired females BACK into the main 55g setup, and viola! The same pair bonded again as if nothing had happened.
I haven't seen any eggs, but the paired female chases everyone else away, except for the male. The two also swim about together. I was wondering if the above situation is common, or if it could mean anything about my cons? I've never seen the "dancing" (spinning) behaviour from the pair of cons, but am I correct in assuming that they are paired up?
