I noticdd this morning that my 3.5"-4" Jag in my 55 has dug out a huge crater behind a piece of drift wood. Is this an indication of breeding behavior? Is there an easy way to sex them? Guess it may be time to go ahead and trade up to a 75 or more just for it.

Here's a rough pic, had to brighten it up a tad.

You have a male. The behavior is completely normal with almost all cichlids. Jags will just move more sand and gravel as they are like buldozers. My jag picks up rocks and rolls them around the tank like it's nothing. This just normal Jag behavior as they make their enviroment more suitable for them selves.

yeh its really common my jags take huge mouth fully of gravel and dig all day i dont think i ever go into the room, go out and then com back in and its dead the same.... heres a pic of my dad juvie jag hes about 5" and hes getting a bit rough now he fights with my dads FHwhich is about 6.5" and his oscar around7.5" also wit convicts etc...

Yes this is normal. My Jag moves sand around and keeps his 'spot' behind a log completely clean of any sand. You're going to love him...mine has been my favorite fish for a long time. They're such characters.

Since no one has mentioned it, you are correct on needing an upgrade. Incorrect on the tank size though. A male jag is eventually going to need a 6' tank minimum. I recommend skipping the 75 gallon upgrade and go straight to a minimum upgrade to a 125 or 135. Both of those have the same footprint (6' x 18") but one is 23" and the other is 25" tall. It's not all that much more maintenance than a 75 either.

Does anyone disagree with that?

no i agree a 125 sounds great

Well I have no quams about upgrading to a bigger tank. I may have to do it in steps though. I just picked up a 72x18x19 for my bichirs yesterday. It's kinda scary to realize that 55's are too small for most critters to house for life.
