Hey guys! So I've had this red spotted sevrum for nearly 6 months now and he has always had odd spots on his fins (it wasn't ich or anything I could find) so I wasn't to worried, well today I noticed a rather large spot on his left front fin.

He's eating fine, being his normal self as far as I can tell, so what in the world is it and should i be worried?

He's in a 75 gallon tank (I'll attach a picture of that as well)

Thank you all in advance!

I would bet it's just a broken ray in the fin. Had a couple fish with this before, in time and good water it will heal up fine.

You see how it is centered right on the cartilage ray in the fin.

She broke 2 of them this time. A few weeks it will heal up. It's sorta like a broken bone, but it's just cartilage.

Thank you Jex! How does a fish break its cartilage? Hit it on something?

Yup, somehow it got bent to the breaking point. Nothing major at all, as you can see in your own fish it still swims just fine. You will see over time every now and then this will happen again.

It's easy to tell from ick due to it being a break and making a white spot/bump on both sides of the fin. Not a spot on one side like ick would be.

That was the most interesting thing I’ve read today, I had a molly with the same thing and never could find out what it was...

Thanks for sharing the info.

Wow broken cartilage....who would have thunk?!?!
