So I have a large pair of Managuense and my roomates are complaining that I don't have enough color in the tank. I have this weird idea to put a large rock pile in the tank with plenty of caves and cover and try to keep mbuna (cheap ones) just for a little more color and to give the non-believers something to talk about. Has anyone done this? Just curious on your thoughts. Still not sure if I'll be able to stomach something this unnatural. FYI- tank is a 200, with my 12"+ pair of mannys and a big ugly pleco.

The biggest problem that I forsee with the mbuna is of course their diet. many are primarily herbivores, jags are hardcore predators. If you give the protein necessary for a Jaguar you could inadvertently cause bloat in the mbuna's.
I don't foresee that as a problem because I don't see any mbuna lasting long with a 12" pair of jags. no matter how much rock work you put in I think the jags (which are highly specialized predators) will find a way to make a snack out of the much smaller mbuna.
here's what you do....tell your roomates if they are so unhappy with your tank that they should get one of their own and stock it with colorful fish that they like. then you'll have an extra tank around the house to look at.

I'd suggest a fancy pleco... One of the SPINY type plecos. Maybe a scarlet/L-25 or another pseuda like a L-273. The leopard is too shy, aside from being so colorful... Among the non-spiny ones, a goldy/ sunshine/ L-14 is a colorful species that comes to mind. Any of the sailfins can work too, just like the Panaques, as long as you have some driftwood. I'd forget anything that swims at mid-water or surface... Targets and/or food for the jags.

Would have to say everything said here I would have to agree with....first off the mbuna's diet is to different from the Jag's, like what was mentioned earlier to much meat in their diet would cause bloat. And I dont see them surving long and if they do happen to they will definately take care of them after the first time the are breeding after the new additions...
