So I had a mysterious amount of water disappear about 5 days ago from my tank. Basically I have a 29 gallon with a 20 gallon w/d connected to it, giving me about 40ish gallons of water total. A day after performing my weekly water change, I noticed an excessive amount of water (2-3 gallons) was missing. I checked the floor for leaks and there was nothing. Completely baffled, I prepared some more water and filled it back up. This process continued for a few days when I finally caught the water thief. My dogs discovered that they preferred running water rather than their water bowls. Now to the best of my knowledge, this won't hurt the fish, (maybe the return pump if the water level gets too low), or the dogs, and as long as I run a vacuum to get the left over food and waste once a week everything will be fine right?

Please discuss.

wouldn't think it should bother fish, but i would worry about the dogs myself. if it was me i would discourage it.

Why do you think it might bother the dogs?

always read that your supposed to wash your hands real good after contacting aquarium water esp. b4 handling food for human consumption, never know what kind of bacteria is in there. i wouldn't drink it myself anyways lol. so i wouldn't encourage my dogs to. but thats just me.

Well that is the type of information and recommendation that I was looking for. Now I have to build a cover that prevents the dogs from drinking from it.
Thanks Rob.

I wish I had an aquarium big enough for me to fit in...

I hopped into my aquarium last summer when it was 104 degrees.

With all those piranhas?:nilly::nilly::nilly:

I doubt your dog will get sick from water. Bacteria is not nearly as dangerous as chemicals. I would cover it to avoid filtration problems, like the pump running dry.
