My dad will loose it if it leaks all on the floor, are these reliable?

I used Marineland canisters years ago, and always keep them in a tray, not directly on the floor.
I found them "not" to be user friendly, a pain in the ass to clean, and after a few cleanings parts wore out easily causing leaks, difficulty in restarting, and cavitation.
I tossed out 2 of them, and will not use them again.

If we're talking about canister filters, it shouldn't be any more risk than any other. The key is you have to gently clean and lube ALL seals and sealing surfaces every time you open the unit. I use silicone grease (plumber's grease). Knock on wood. Haven't had a leak in 4yrs of canister use and my Marineland C360 and Sunsun 302s are all on their original O-rings.
