Have had my Odoe for a month or two now, have been feeding him live feeders but they are getting to be a pita and it would be nice to feed all my fish frozen food rather than buying different foods. (delhizi eating sliversides and frozen prawns)

He hasn't eaten in about 4 days and ive been putting frozen silversides in the tank but he doesnt show much interest before the delhzi scoops them up.

Questions are:

How long can he go without eating and

How do I get him more interested in frozen vs live food

Thanks guys! Working on getting pictures / vid up of the tank

Fish can go several weeks even month(s) without eating. I have had the best luck with training Odoe pike to open the lid and stand back a ways and throw the food in front of it from a distance. This stimulates their strike instincts and also looks like the food is alive. Don't give up, it may take a couple of weeks. Just like any other animal out there, if they get hungry enough, they'll just about eat anything. Try smelt and shrimp

I have one that has been eating freeze dried krill almost since I bought it.It can be done, just takes time.

Ultimatejay nailed it.

Another thing I believe is a factor, when you do give in to live, how much are you feeding? Enough to see the bulge or enough to survive for a few more weeks?

When I try to get fish off live, I only feed 1-2 feeders max (1 2" Comets or 2 1" comets) and starve for min 2 weeks.
W/these guys I think they take towards freeze dried krill faster than anything. Once on that, I try other stuff.

I got my 6" Odoe on Pellets and like a jacka$$ I fed him shrimp the following day and he wont take pellets no more:irked:
If/Once you get him on pellets, keep him on pellets for a few days, then mix it up.
Another I do is cut shrimp big enough to eat and stuff 1 cichlid gold in it... takes it down.

Last... For pellet training.
I have a shot glass (bottom is rounded) and I place a few pellets in the glass. Toss some shrimp on top of the pellets and drop a sprinkle of waterover the shrimp. The pellets should absorb some of the shrimp flavor and soften the pellet if you let it sit for 3 minutes. I find my Odoe does not like hard pellets, until he knows its food this is what I have to do:swear:

I have 3" odoe on krill and now at 4-5" at its taking food sticks. I just drop krill in the flow off my ac70 n it gets use to feeding off the flow. I threw in food sticks n its hits them, after 3 days its feeding on food sticks now. Give it a try

Thanks guys! I was giving him 2 1" comets every day before I started trying the frozen stuff. I also tried closing the tail of the sliversides in the top of the tank so they dangle and move around in the water, he is interested but never really goes for it. As long as he can go 2 weeks+ without eating I think I should be able to get him onto the frozen stuff.

Thanks for all the tips guys!

My little fella is now taking Hikari sinking carnivore pellets.
