60 bucks on ebay, thought i'd be saying about 100 over an eheim. since i'm a college student with no job, value is important. i've heard good things about jebo and stuf, so i thought, why not?

it was quiet at first, but got a little noisier, not too bothersome but definitely noticeable since it was in my bedroom. the filter design meant half of the sponge media didn't get adequate water flow, but my params were okay. the flow, advertised as pretty high, was pretty decent, actually, especially with all the head.

well, today, 2 months after i got it, the damn thing BROKE!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS MODEL. the lid broke because the intake hose to the filter was parallel to the ground, and when it was full of water the weight in the 1" ID hose was enough to stress and break the plastic lid of the filter. here is a picture of the damage:

i'm not getting an eheim and never looking back. i thought all you guys on here were crazy for spending 200-300 bucks on a fish filter. i never thought i'd spend 6 dates worth of money on a thing that filters water but gosh darnit, i've learned my lesson. you get what you pay for. i've never regretted buying something that was more expensive than the cheaper, no-brand kind. blargh.

now i'm stuck with no backup filter, using a sponge filter and doing a ton of water changes daily. blahhh.

I've seen this happen before, there is a tread on the planted tank equipment with same problem. It can be fix with pvc pipe and glue, I would get a piece of 3/4" pvc, 2 sleeves 3/4" to 1" and two 1" male adapter. Glue the adapter to the sleeve, the sleeve to the pipe, the pipe to the lid of the canister, use pvc glue; let it cure for 24 hrs.

I saw that post as well. Looks like an easy DIY fix. Been thinking about getting one of these, I don't expect them to be perfect for the price. As long as it works, even with a couple fix-its here and there, I'd have no problem running one on a project tank (not my main display tank).

Dont give up on the CFS500 just yet. Over on Aquaria Central CWO4GUNNER has been doing a series of mods on this filter and has figured out that the broken intake/output risers are due to the O-ring that is used. He has a the fixes and mods on the following link:
http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239484&page=7

This links to the part where he goes into the oring issue, but the whole thread is worth a read, Gunner is great - lots of insight.

that sucks, I have mine for like 4 months now, no problems at all, the O-rings work perfectly. Although I did notice that the later models vary a bit from the first ones. the hoses and the media are different, perhaps there is some other changes that I have not recognized yet that lead to such a break.

Still I think it is a great filter for the $$. dont give up on it.

This is typical what happens with China knockoffs and poor R&D/QC. Use a similar mold design to a major brand, except they use an untested plastic polymer with a hope the for the best attitude. These problems were bound to happen.
