alright...lets leave that fighting behind ha...i am going to get some pictures of the bass tomarrow if i can...there is like 30 little small guys that sit right under this tree it is really cool.

i was fishing the other day, and got a few they are tiny! ha only like 4 inches, and they were trying to take down a 2 inch lure...haha :) the bigger ones come in like ever 5 minutes, its kinda wierd they have like a pattern, one is huge easily 4 or 5 pounds.

mabye i do have this wrong...i dono, i apologize, i just wasent understanding becuase people collect fish from the wild all the time....but i donno...

No sweat man..misunderstandings happen all the time.
Just about all the fish in aquariums are collected from the wild (less the easy to breed tropicals) from all around the world.

Collecting is fine provided it's done within the law, plain and simple. No one here is suggesting your fish collection would be illegal (but easily could be) only the way the captive water was interacting with wild water.

I don't like speaking for others but I believe Poly was simply expressing his thoughts on the fact that it would be just as easy to go 50 feet to lake and see the very same fish you have in your pond. I must admit I tend to agree with him on this. I can see that you're spending time on the water and I'll bet you're already seeing all kinds of stuff that would make a bass pond 50 from the bigger bass pond a little redundant. But at the same time I like to keep a bunch of "minnows" so I would say....To each his own. If you want the bass pond more power to you.

Back to my collecting point...there are legal ways to collect fish and reading the laws will go a long way to keep individuals ethical and responsible within this hobby. If we can just convince all the others to read the state code on collecting this hobby will have safe and viable future. If we allow the laws to slip, I can promise that the our way of life will soon fade. A few more ethical lapses could put a world of hurt on what we do.

Good luck on the pond no matter which direction you go but please read up on your state code and follow it carefully. If you have questions about some of the rules (laws) please post your questions and as a collective the membership here might be able to help answer the questions and or explain the reasoning behind the law.

Is this the epitome of arrogance or could there possible be someone, somewhere more out of touch with reality? Where do you think you are posting? This website is called monsterfishkeepers.com. You seem to think you are posting on a professional scientific website. The vast majority of people on here keep fish for fun. Whether that fun is in the form of simple watching or learning or whatever is really none of your business. Keep your proletariat views to yourself. Who are you to judge why anyone here keeps fish? Thank god you do not work for the state, as fascists like yourself tend to cause a lot of problems for us "criminally ignorant." If you truly want to help educate people, perhaps you should work on your people skills. Calling someone’s idea “stupid” in your first post tends to put people on the defensive. Teleost has a much more subtle and friendly way of talking to people.

“Stand by it”...”pull the experience level thing”...how do you plan to do that when you won't tell us what your occupation is? Here's an earlier post that some might appreciate:

But for the fun of it I googled your signature, "MIDWEST AQUATICS RESEARCH". What a surprise! There were two hits! But they both were from this forum. Dang. Maybe your catchy description of what your company does would yield more info. Hey, "Specialists in 'Anachronistic' fishes and 'Parasitic' Aquatic predator Husbandry." didn't return any hits. NONE! Either you are a complete phony, or your company is so insignificant as to not even have a web presence. 5th graders at least have a myspace page.

Since you are unwilling to reveal your supposed expertise, perhaps you should stop saying you're an expert. You fall into the same category as untold thousands of "experts" populating various websites on various subjects, simple to dismiss with a click of a mouse. You say you have revealed your Peter Parker-ish identity to a few of the people on here. With the rest of us "normal" folk, you have precious little credibility.

And yet another bubble of Hydrogen sulfide emerges from the Kiddie pool.....Don't you have a rat or another Unidentified Frog to feed to your bass or something???

schulace123..As I said earlier.. I only asked you why you would want a pond when you already have a Lake..Thats it..

I have no issue with you and wish you luck..My issue is and continues to be with these "little bubbles of noxious gas" that seem to have a overwhelming urge to say something stupid every time one writes the word responsible or legal on this site...These people do not represent the Native fish hobby very well and they are ecologically and ethically reckless.

Holy crap you mean minnows are gamefish!!!!! gee wow that one must have slipped me somewhere...I do not keep gamefish..I have no interest in them....

Nice try to be a smart *ss there...

You failed.

Next time SPECIFY what you keep since you are so quick to pull your d*ck out on everyone else.

How about you spend less time bashing some of the members here and more time figuring out how to clean up your sh***y water supply in Detroit?

If you don't care about anyone on here and you think you're being an "E Thug" by posting on a f*kkin' FISH FORUM, how about heading for the "E Door"?? It's ridiculous that anyone who claims to be a "fish expert" would come down on a guy like you did to him.

You claim to have all of this knowledge/experience yet you act like a punk *ss, whiney btch when the guy is just running ideas through his head.

The exit is that way chief --->

Do you know what the search function is???? I bet you might just find out what I keep if you used it...

****ty water supply???? sorry I do not understand this what ****ty water supply? my water is actually very clean and likely one of the best quality in the US..The Detroit river turns over about once a day and happens to be very clean..The sediment is an issue the water is not.

Reading was not a class in school you excelled in was it..Yeah and sure I'm a E-thug...whatever that is supposed to be...

alright guys...come on here, enough fighting and stuff, i just was not really understanding what he was saying, and i apologize for going off on him like that.

but i do have a question we have a hose that brings water from the lake up, if i were to fill up the pond with that..how long, or if at all, would i have to cycle?

You should not need to cycle at all..As long as you keep an initial low stocking density you should be good to go from there. I would suggest, If you are using a liner, adding a substrate. This will increase the biological area available to bacteria you want to establish. Adding substrate directly from the lake to the pond will quite effectively instantly cycle the pond. Initial aeration will also help speed this if no substrate is present.

I hope my reply here doesn't open this whole thing up again but.........

Poly said he said it was stupid to make a pond next to another pond that have the very same fish. He was then called a name for that comment.

A fight ensued amongst many members at which time Poly openly displayed his disgust for the behavior exhibited here occasionally by some members.

Since then an apology was made and niceties between the two have been exchanged.

I can see how Poly might rub a few members the wrong way but come on! His comment didn't warrant name calling and I can see how some grow tired of this and respond the way he did. My goodness he's been around a while and if you haven't figured out his style by now just read some of what he has to say. He has a style and it is what it is, take it or leave it.

As for those irritated by his signature "Specialists in 'Anachronistic' fishes and 'Parasitic' Aquatic predator Husbandry"...

I guess you don't like the "specialist" part? Or is it his research?

Anachronistic:something that is out of its natural time or that appears to be so.

A parasite is an organism that lives in or on the living tissue of a host organism at the expense of that host.

Sounds like Poly is into some pretty weird stuff. Isn't anyone curious about what he does?
