State of chaos
This is a copy/paste of a thread on this incident I made on an Amph forum, I was to lazy to retype.
I'm in a panic right now, the smallest of my 3 Firebellies just got seriously injured during a feeding fight. One of the big guys grabbed his right front leg and deathrolled, shredding the skin and possibly shattering the bone. He almost looks like he's trying to put weight on it, but it looks very limp. He was probably deathrolled 6 or 7 times before I broke it up (I had to jam the blunt end of a paper clip in the big Newt's mouth to free the little guy) so it looks pretty bad. Surprisingly, he is still eating, and even showing the usual minor food aggression to the other Newts. What should I do? I'd like to divide the tank and separate him from the other guys so he doesn't get bullied, and hopefully his leg recovers :(

Update: It might not be as bad as I thought, he seems to be able to walk on the ground, but somewhat laboredly. I'm gonna divide the tank until he heals up.

If it twisted the leg five or six times, there's damage. Try twisting your leg around five or six times and see how it feels. Not sure what to tell you on helping it heal though.

Your newt should be OK, actualy in time he will regenerate a new leg, all you have to do is keep its water very clean with daily partial changes with unclorinated water and some tetra general topic in hand just in case it becomes infected. BUT that this be a lesson to you, newts are relentless canibals and grab any chance to eat their own kind so keeping diferent size newts together is a big no no, Ive even herd of them trying to eat conspecifics of similar size. Make shure your aquarium is not over populated and keep your smaller newt apart untill he grows up and becomes the same size as the rest of them.

Just keep him clean. Newts can regenrate pretty much anything from tails, to legs, to heart tissue.

Strangely enough, the bone wasn't broken and the gash actually healed up my the end of the night:eek:

It will be fine, just put it apart in a higienic setup with some substrate or deco from the old setup for biological filtration and do often partial water changes with declorinated water.
