My bf while grocery shopping at Walmart decided to buy a fish for his daughters 10 gallon tank. Well it killed all the other fish and grew like a weed. It seemed like overnight he got so big that he couldn't turn around. I bought him a 55 gallon tank still not sure what kind of fish it even was. Then I took pictures and went to my lfs who told me it was most likely a pacu. He's been in the 55 for about 4 months and my bf decided to get him a friend. So now I have a tinfoil in with him. They swim together and seem to get along well.

But the pacu is already about a foot length and I need to find a much bigger tank quickly. My bf is no longer EVER allowed in the fish department of any store!

Yeah....Pacu generally need 200+ gal. tanks - and that's on the small side. They really belong in professional aquariums set-ups or with people who have the ability to house a 36 in + fish.

The space my current tank is in can house about an 8 foot tank - I should have found out what the fish was BEFORE I made the purchase. A relative built a tank into their wall or built a wall around the tank so I'm going to try and do some major research and see if we can swing this for a while. I guess if all else fails we can eat him

Keeping pacu in a 200 gallon tank is not a good idea....they need much bigger tanks when they are 3 foot long monsters

if you take a look at how big your 55 is...that's about the size of an adult Pacu...now imagine having a tank big enough for your 55 gallon to turn around in and be comfortable.

Thanks! So now where the heck do I buy a 500 gallon tank? I'm assuming it has to be custom made. I'm guessing my tax refund has just been spent :)

Yeah, they're usually all custom made at that size. You can look on Craigslist.com to see if anyone is selling one. Or contact your LFS - they usually have contacts with people who build custom tanks. Or if you are so inclined - you can try to build one yourself.
