Lost a big guy today. Florida Gar took a leap and didn't land in water. I've had him since he was tiny and have never once seen him act like he would do that. The only other fish in there with him were a Motoro and a Clown Knife. The CK is only a few inches longer and has been with the gar since they were both much smaller. The gar has been inceasingly aggressive to the CK lately but nothing too bad. Thoughts? The CK finally had enough and chased him until he jumped? Most of the tank is covered. Damn! This really bums me out.

I don't know if he broke his back or not. I just know he jumped out and was dead when I got home from work. It's kind of odd. I've just never seen him give any sign of that before. But I know as he started to get as big as the knife he also started kind of nipping the knife so maybe the knife just had enough. I really don't know. I'm just guessing.

Any other ideas for why he jumped? The water is fine. It seems so odd to look over there and not see him. I was thinking I probably should have started this thread in that gar forum. I wouldn't be offended if a mod moved it over there.

Was the tank he was in too small for those three large fish?

Nope. Plenty of water. I think I'm just going to leave that tank the way it is for a while. I'm not going to add anything else right now. I'll just let the CK and the ray have that tank to themselves. They seem to get along just fine. The gar was also starting to get aggressive towards the ray during feeding. I hate to lose any of them but if there was a potential problem....there isn't anymore. Still sucks. I could have moved him but it didn't seem very dire at all. But then again...we don't see what happens after we turn the lights off and go to bed.
