Just as I start to prepare for a 180 one of my 4 year old Red Hooks in my 75 is acting funny. :(

He was fine yesterday but today I noticed that he is having a hard time staying afloat. His body is angled slightly upward and it seems as though if he stops swimming he sinks. He also seems like he's swollen, almost like he ate to much.

He has been in the same tank with the same tankmates for about four years. The four Red Hooks were the last new fish to go in so I know that there can be no parasite from another fish.

Is it possible that he just "gorged" himself?? Or do I need to worry??

Im hoping he's OK so I can enjoy all four of the Red Hooks in the 180.

Any help is appreciated, thanks a bunch.

They get spirulina flakes, regular flakes, and some sinking pellets. I have to feed the flakes first then put in some pellets for the Pictus cats. Otherwise the Red Hooks dont let anything get to the bottom.
About once a week I give em a little frozen brine.

I just ran downstairs to check on them and he is still exhibiting some of the "symptoms" , only they are not as bad as they were yesterday.

Walls, fish, like people can get intestinal infections like gastrointestinitus, it is not always easy to determinei where it comes from. I would not be to suprised it there were a few spoiled brine shrimp in a batch or a bit of spoiled flake food and your redhook picked up a case of bacterial or fungal infection. Most of the time it clears up on it's own, the symptoms are gas and bloating of the intestines. Sort of like eating a bad burrito. Hopefully that is what it is and your fish will recover within a couple days.
All we can do is the best we can but minimizing contaminants is all we can do.

i would say swim bladder infection, im 90% sure of it. it has all the tell tale signs. its pretty much uncurable but you can prolong life. my own opinion i would be to euthanise if the fish isnt any better within a week. if it is swim bladder infection than its quite likely related to water conditions. can i ask what routine you have for tank maintenance?

Are thet still alive? could be constipated try some canned peas squeeze the insides out and feed them that without the skin.

I agree with danny, probably a bladder infection. i hope im wrong thou.

That is why I hope it is the intestinal infection.
