Ok at the Pet Supplies Plus in my town there is a nice 5-6 inch red belly piranha for (get ready for this) $8!!!!! I want it so badly but it's a little bigger than the ones I have right now, I would of had it in my tank already buuuut the people there told me that it was dropped off by some guy who just couldn't keep it anymore cause it was too big for his tank. This piranha was kept alone all of it's life in its former owner's care. I'm worried that this guy won't take to being in a shoal well due to being alone all of its life and will beat up my shoal. I know that you can't predict if a fish will adapt to being in a shoal, is there a big risk in adding this new fish since it has been alone in a tank without tankmates?

OOPS!! Somehow this wasnt posted in the piranha forum could a mod please move it?

well, couple of things.

it's only 5 inches so it's less then a year old...not much of his life has passed. lmao.

it could go back in a shoal. The feed your shoal, redecorate their home, drop the new guy in and scare the crap out of the shoal along with the new guy trick tends to work.

i forget what size tank you said you have but if you've got room, i'd get it. i thought your smallest was 4 inches? You sure this one is bigger then all of your's? Can be difficult using just the eyeball test

I have a 75 gallon and yeah my smallest is around 4 inches the other 2 are around 5 inches, the one at the pet store is around 5-6 (we tried measuring it by putting a ruler up to the tank when it swam by none of the employees were brave enough to net it and try to measure it for me). Right now my tank is pretty much bare so there isn't anything to move around :/

Shoaling is an innate behaviour for piranhas it's not something that's learned it's hard wired into their brains so assuming you take the nessicary precautions that you would take whenever adding a piranha to a shoal you will be fine i don't think this p would be anymore aggressive due to being alone.

so you've only got 3 in a 75.

i added a 6 or 7 incher into my shoal last week, second largest in my tank. Same tank size, same number of reds. Cost me 15

Woah a 6-7 incher would cost around 30-50 bucks here at my favorite lfs.... So I would have room for this new guy in the 75?

the one i picked up was a trade in also. they just wanted to get rid of it. the stores that keep a constant stock of red bellies here cost 20 bucks for 6-8 inches. The ones that hardly get in are usually 30 bucks.

yeah, you've got room, especially if you aren't doing any decor. i have driftwood, fake plants, fake hollow log
