OK, A few weeks ago i added a small arowana maybe 3 inches in length to my 30 gallon. It contains a single killifish (cycler who seems to be holding his own lol) and 2 senegal bichirs each about 5 1/2 inches long. All seemed to be well until a christmas eave party came and i was 8 hours or so late on feeding for the first time in a couple months....i come home and my bichirs and arowana are going crazy. when i noticed i was already dropping in pellets for food and the bichirs smelled it and peeled off immediately but then i noticed my arowana is missing his caudal fin and his anal fin is missing a few little pieces. the worst thing is that he is missing the very back 1/8 in of his operculum. i immediately moved the bichirs into my empty 99% done cycling 55 gallon. While the arowana is obviously wounded he still seems lively and still has a voracious appetite so i was wondering if he would be able to fully heal if anyone knew? Or any advice to help it along?

So you got a 30 gal, and a 55 gal tank. Do you have anything bigger?
As for healing you need to keep the water very clean, you can add salt.
What temp is your tank?

Another fine example of why small arowana need be raised without tank mates.

thanks for the input! As far as a bigger tank my girlfriend is under the impression that i don't need one unless i have a fish that looks big enough to require it......So grow little arowana grow lol

Score 1 for bichirs, 0 for arowana, WOOT WOOT.

Just kidding, hope your arowana recovers. Once it grows as big as the bichirs, I doubt your senegals would have the balls to pick on it anymore, Revenge would be sweet!

every part of his missing fins will eventually grow back unless it is down to the root.. so if it is just pieces here and there it sounds like you will be okay.. add a little aquarium salt .. according to directions.. because it helps with stress and keeping away infections.. keep the water clean.. do alot of partial water changes and then full changes regularly... that is the most important thing... and do not add tankmates.. arows are fragile at this age.. you were very fortunate that it was not worse.

it looks as if it's possible his caudal fin is gone...but i am hoping there is a little bit there....any idea when i should see progress if there would be any?

gone to your eyesight may not be gone down to root.. just hope everything will start new growth.. time will tell..but the good thing is he is eating and acting normal.. that is a big plus.. it is a slow progress to new fin growth.. but it slowly will happen.

yes he is hungry as all be still and pretty much isolated now....i feed him a mixture of live crickets, beefheart, bloodworms, and brine shrimp....is there anything i could feed differently i wonder that makes fins grow faster?
