I took on this tank from a dying relative.

Algae blooms every week.

Plants with mbuna? That's gonna be a really nice tank once you have it in order.
 
As said above, algae comes from light and nutrients in the water.
The only way to get rid of nutrients are by diluting them with partial water changes.
This means, a regular regime of partial water changes (on going).
Some people do one 50% water change per week, some more, some less.
I usually figure 30-40% every other day to keep my nutrient level (nitrates) between 2 to 5 ppm. With that regime, I seldom had excess algae, except where suns rays would hit the glass.
My lights were on timers (with tanks that had plants, about 8 hours per day).
 
Do a big water change, then blackout the tank for the next 4 days by turning the lights off and covering the glass. Don't disturb or even feed the fish during this time. Most plants will survive the blackout, although they might look a bit scrawny after.

Your algae doesn't look that bad though. The stuff on the glass you can scrape off with a credit card or razor. I'm surprised the mbuna haven't eaten all of it along with the plants.
